In 1983 and again in 2005, Cabot Creamery spilled ammonia into the Winooski River damaging the river for miles. The 2005 spill killed an estimated 15,000 fish alone along 5.5 miles of the river. Regulators discovered after the second spill that Cabot had not fulfilled its 1983 commitment to develop hazardous materials policies.
As many Vermonters may know, Cabot/Agri-mark was fined $65,000 in early August, 2011 for misrepresenting products as rBST free (artificial growth hormone used to increase milk production). Under the settlement Agri-mark will also donate $75,000 worth of dairy products to local food banks. It's a slap on the wrist turned into a "do-gooder" marketing scheme for Cabot that might end up as a tax write-off. Hardly a penalty for intentionally misleading consumers.
Please Cabot, for the farmers, for the fields, for the consumer's, clean up your act.
